“InGuardians’ Live Online Training launches with top-ranking ‘Assessing and Exploiting Control System and IIoT’ class taught by Justin Searle”

Seattle, WA – April 27, 2020

For more than 20 years, InGuardians’ core has been top-tier training. Our Instructors have developed and taught the industry’s leading courses for SANS and Black Hat, as well as on-site for our customers. We are very excited to offer InGuardians Live Online Training directly to you.

As we have all seen during these difficult times, live conferences have been canceled and training has moved online. At InGuardians, we know that this provides a way to offer a more personalized training experience to students. We are offering our first class: “Assessing and Exploiting Control System and IIoT” with Justin Searle, InGuardians’ Director of ICS Security.

This four-day course teaches hands-on penetration testing techniques used to test individual components of a control system, including embedded electronic field devices, network protocols, RF communications, Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and various forms of master servers and their ICS applications. You can apply the skills you learn in this course directly to the Smart Grid, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs), smart meters, building management, manufacturing, Home Area Networks (HAN), smart appliances, SCADA, substation automation, synchrophasors, and even IoT. This course is structured around the formal penetration testing methodology Justin Searle created for the United States Department of Energy.

Using this methodology and the ControlThings Pentest Platform (previously SamuraiSTFU), an open-source Linux distribution for pentesting energy sector systems and other critical infrastructure, students will perform hands-on penetration testing tasks on user interfaces (on master servers and field device maintenance interfaces), control system protocols (modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-104), proprietary RF communications (433MHz, 869MHz, 915MHz), and embedded circuits (via memory dumping, bus snooping, JTAG attacks, and firmware analysis).

Students will tie these exercises back to control system devices that can be tested using these techniques. The course exercises will be performed on a mixture of real-world and simulated devices to give students the most realistic experience possible in a portable classroom setting.

This discounted offering is the same content offered through our classes at SANS and Black Hat, with some added benefits. We are offering extended office hours with our instructors and teaching assistants (TAs). In addition, we will give digital copies of the course content and labs to all registered students. Last, but not least, InGuardians Live Training includes access to the recorded training session for 4 months, enabling students to replay the course at their own pace. During the course, students can interact with the instructor, TA’s, and other students using our Discord server.

Dates: June 8 – June 11, 9 AM – 5 PM CDT
